This hike is not just another walk. In addition to encouraging sport and a healthy lifestyle, the climb up Mount Pagasarri is a tribute to Basque mountains. In its efforts to raise public awareness about environmental care, BBK’s Social Work plants one tree for every person who registers for this activity. These trees are planted as part of the BBK Basoa project, a joint initiative in collaboration with the Lurgaia Foundation to plant young saplings of oak, beech, ash, birch, hawthorn… with seeds from Bizkaia.
The route was designed so that everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, can enjoy the journey. On their arrival at the summit, which is at an altitude of 673 metres, participants can enjoy the traditional hamaiketako, which consists of omelette and chorizo a la sidra sandwiches accompanied by wine, broth and water, in a unique setting.
In its desire to get Bizkaians to take an active part in BBK’s projects, a competition was organised for the 2019 edition for the people who went on the climb. To take part in this initiative, a photo had to be published on social networks during the climb to Pagasarri or at the top of the mountain, with the hashtag #BBKPagasarri. Participants were entered into a draw for five sustainable experiences.
