Classical poetry

Discover the rhythm, music and structure of poetry

We invite you to take part in a new literary creation project dedicated to exploring the richness of classical poetry and the techniques behind some of the most important verses in our literary tradition.

Guided by Luis Mendoza, we will discover the essential elements of this unique form of writing: rhyme, metre and rhythm. We will learn how poems are constructed and put these techniques into practice by creating our own compositions.

Throughout the term, we will use the same methods employed by writers such as Quevedo, Góngora, Lope de Vega and Garcilaso de la Vega. We will also explore the work of Boscán and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, alongside other great poets who made the Spanish Golden Age one of the most remarkable periods in literature.

We will work with both shorter and longer poetic metres, experimenting with traditional forms such as the redondilla, quintilla, espinela and Cervantes-style ovillejo. We will then move on to the eleven-syllable line and one of its most important expressions: the sonnet.

A space to read, understand and write poetry, enjoy the musicality of language and prove that great verses can also be created in Bilbao.
