We celebrate ten years of BBK Basoa with more than 60 hectares of native forest restored and 36,000 trees planted

This year, we celebrate the tenth anniversary of planting the first tree as part of the BBK Basoa project together with Lurgaia Fundazioa. The initiative was launched with a clear ambition: to actively involve the public in restoring Bizkaia’s natural heritage and to advance the restoration of native forests of high ecological value. Over the past decade, 36,446 trees and shrubs have reclaimed their place in the landscape, forming 60 hectares of native forest that continue to grow, expand and support biodiversity.
Over these ten years, BBK Basoa has become a benchmark for participatory forest restoration in the region. The plantings carried out between 2017 and 2026 will absorb more than 11,000 tonnes of CO₂ over the next four decades, a figure that demonstrates the restored forests’ future capacity to absorb CO₂ and regenerate.
A decade of impact in numbers
Behind every planting day are committed people: a total of 5,655 volunteers who have made environmental restoration a collective effort. Thanks to their involvement, work has been carried out at more than 40 sites across Bizkaia, including Undabaso, Gaztelugatxe, Matxitxako, Arratzu, Bermeo, Torre Madariaga, Morga, Zalla, Leioa, Mallabia, Gerekiz, Bakio, Arrankudiaga, Igorre, Arburu, Berrekondo, Ziortza-Bolibar, Amunategi and Belatxiketa.
The project’s track record shows that environmental restoration goes beyond planting: it means sharing a common purpose, helping people understand how ecosystems work and strengthening the long-term care of our environment. With the participation of families, associations and residents from across Bizkaia, BBK Basoa has built a community network that shows how citizen action drives social and ecological transformation.
A new challenge: 1,500 trees over three days in Muxika
To coincide with the tenth anniversary and ASTEKLIMA 2026, we are organising a new BBK Basoa event from 23 to 25 October. The aim of this event is to plant 1,500 native trees and shrubs in the Astelarra neighbourhood of Muxika.
Alongside the work on the ground, the event will include educational activities open to the public on biodiversity, sustainable forest management and climate change mitigation. We invite everyone to join us over these three days and continue supporting the restoration of our native forests.
