What is it
This project, which takes place in BBK Klima, an experiential park located in the heart of the Biosphere Reserve, is at the service of schools in Bizkaia. An environmental education initiative that enhances sensitivity and awareness, knowledge and proactive attitudes both individually and collectively towards sustainability. Through the «Earth», «Biodiversity» and «Planet» projects and educational activities, the centre promotes action for sustainability. This approach is based not only on theoretical teaching, but also on practical experience and direct commitment to the preservation of our environment. The project activities are developed through a learning teaching process based on experimentation and research. Projects which are complemented by workshops aimed at encouraging coexistence and collaboration between students from different schools. It is aimed at students in the 4th, 5th and 6th year of primary education and 1st and 2nd years of ESO. Each year more than 2,000 students take part in this programme, with 4-day stays.
History, Education and Commitment to the Environment
The UIHP project, Urdaibaiko Ingurumen Hezkuntzako Proiektua, aims to educate in values that favor a model of society based on sustainability. In this sense, it aligns with the objectives set out in the document on the development of commitments under the 2030 Environment Framework Programme .
Urdaibaiko Ingurumen Hezkuntzako Proiektua continues working for sustainability since 1982, and as a result of the work carried out in this long career, today it is well known and recognized in education for sustainability in Euskal Herria and in the State. Its job is to open new social scenarios, working each year with about 60 schools of compulsory education, about 2,200 students and about 135 teachers.
The Urdaibai Environmental Education Project is consistent with the principles of education for sustainability. Both teachers and students in schools can have the opportunity to enter this teaching-learning process so that they can take up activities in accordance with what they have learned and set an example in the environment in which they live. It also paves the way for this model of life to be disseminated throughout the educational community.
Highlight that, in recent years, one of the actions has been making curricular adaptations for the stay at UIHP of those schools that develop the School Agenda 2030. The integration into A30E of schools which are not on the programme is also promoted, showing the possibilities it can offer to the whole educational community.
Mention that the UIHP school develops other significant work lines such as the development of materials, working models, publications, courses and presentations in international settings.
Due to all of this, in June 2013 the school Urdaibaiko Ingurumen Hezkuntzako Proiektuak (UIHP) received the Honorary Sustainable School Certificate in recognition of the work done throughout its trajectory.
