Being a grandparent today
Sasoiko Centre , 30 September 2026 , 10:00h
Enjoy time with your grandchildren without giving up your own plans, interests and free time
Do you feel that the role of grandparents has changed? Families today face new routines, technologies and approaches to parenting, while many people enter retirement with active, independent lives and plenty of personal projects.
Being a grandparent today is a space for conversation and reflection, designed by and for people like you. We are not here to tell you how to look after your grandchildren. Instead, we will share experiences, discuss common challenges and explore together what it means to be a grandparent in the 21st century.
Throughout the sessions, we will talk openly about the challenges facing families today and how to enjoy caring for grandchildren without putting our own lives aside. Supporting and spending time with younger family members can be deeply rewarding, but it is also important to establish boundaries, make time for our own interests and find a balance that works for the whole family.
Together with professionals, we will discuss everyday situations and discover practical tools for enjoying time with grandchildren, communicating more effectively and preventing the misunderstandings that can sometimes arise with their parents. You do not need any knowledge of education or childcare—just a willingness to participate, listen to other experiences and share your own.
We will also create the “Modern Grandparents’ Ten-Point Guide”, a collective document setting out our rights, responsibilities and boundaries. It will recognise the value of older people’s experience and help ensure that their voices are heard throughout Bizkaia.
Your experience matters, but so does your time. Sign up and help shape a new way of experiencing this stage of family life.
