PROTOCOLO

Inspired by Henrik Ibsen’s play An Enemy of the People, “Protocol” is set in a present-day European city on the Mediterranean coast. The characters are Petra, the young mayor, and Tomas, her husband, a doctor at the highly successful international spa that has restored economic prosperity to the region. From their seaside villa, life looks vibrant and full of color. But suddenly, alarms are raised in the face of an unexpected crisis, and panic begins to unearth all the mistakes of the past. An unstoppable whirlwind that spares no blame, forcing the couple to lay bare their most intimate secrets and choose between public commitment and family stability.
But “Protocol” is even more than that, as it contains two versions of the very same story. The characters are also Tomas, the popular mayor of the city, and his wife Petra, the doctor at the spa—a simple adjustment of genders that rearranges the pieces. This role reversal, performed by the same actors, allows for the contrasting of two perspectives on a single conflict. They are two separate plays, yet they are the same. The audience will choose to watch one of the versions. Or both. And look themselves in the mirror, just as this marriage is forced to do.
